Fusidic Acid

It is an antibiotic with a steroid skeleton, whose chemical structure is similar to that of cephalosporin P and is not a hormone. It is produced by the fungus Fusidium coccineum or certain Cephalosporium spp. Its mechanism of action is to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis, exerting bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects. It has strong antibacterial activity against staphylococci (including methicillin-resistant strains and strains resistant to other antibiotics), and certain antibacterial activity against streptococci, enterococci, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, clostridia, Neisseria species and mycobacteria. It has weak activity against Bacteroides fragilis.
