It is a semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic with an antibacterial spectrum similar to gentamicin, effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Proteus and other bacteria. It is indicated for the treatment of severe infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative bacilli including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, some other Pseudomonas species, Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia, Acinetobacter and staphylococci (methicillin-sensitive strains), such as bacteremia or septicemia, bacterial endocarditis, lower respiratory tract infections, bone and joint infections, biliary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, complicated urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, etc. As it is stable to most aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes, it is particularly suitable for the treatment of severe infections caused by Gram-negative bacilli strains resistant to kanamycin, gentamicin or tobramycin.
