Daptomycin

Daptomycin is a cyclic lipopeptide extracted from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces reseosporus. It is indicated for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections caused by certain susceptible Gram-positive strains, such as abscesses, surgical site infections and skin ulcers. It is also used for right-sided infective endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and bacteremia caused by Staphylococcus aureus complicated with RIE or complicated skin and soft tissue infections. It disrupts bacterial membrane function in multiple ways and rapidly kills Gram-positive bacteria. In addition to acting on most clinically relevant Gram-positive bacteria, it is notably potently active in vitro against isolated strains that have developed resistance to methicillin, vancomycin, linezolid and other antibiotics.
